Don’t Rain On My Parade

by Jerry Malkes

Not even Mother Nature could dampen a magnificent display of antique cars at the North Hempstead Beach Park on August 27, 2012. This was the second annual Fun Day Monday Hometown U.S.A. promoted by the Town of North Hempstead and The Vintage Chevrolet Club of America Queens County Region. Included in this presentation was a special salute to the Armed Forces.

I estimated that there were about 40 vintage cars parked with a great view of the beach. Clubs ranged from Greater New York Region, AACA (GNYR), Vintage Chevrolet Club (VCCA), Southside Boys, Centurion Cruisers and other worthwhile organizations. We were provided by the Town of North Hempstead with a free hospitality tent, free food popcorn, cotton candy, coffee tea, etc. A special thank you to Paul Parnes, Genie Feminella and Sabastian D’Agostino for their efforts.

The only draw back to a glorious event is that we were all faced with a drenching rain returning home. I pitied the drivers in cars with manual windshield wipers or no defroster. My 1980 Toyota Celica was initiated with its first rain in 32 years. I forgot how to turn on the windshield wipers for about 30 seconds. Still, I’m sure a great time was had by all.
